Dear Mayor/Councilperson/Commissioner (____),

As part of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, I feel privileged to invite you to attend the National Day of Prayer observance in our community on Thursday, May (DAY ). Our observance will be held (location) from (time) to (time). The gathering will be filled with prayer for our nation, its governmental leaders, churches and families. (Name of speaker) will deliver a special message on prayer and its importance to our nation’s present and future.

As you may know, the annual National Day of Prayer was established by federal law in 1952 when the United States Congress passed a joint resolution, which was signed by President Harry Truman. The law was amended in 1988 and signed by President Ronald Reagan, specifically designating the first Thursday in May as the official National Day of Prayer.

I have reached our to your office requesting a proclamation, and invite you to attend the National Day of Prayer gathering to read the proclamation aloud.

In 1988, President Reagan’s proclamation shared this bold quote, “Americans in every generation have turned to their Maker in prayer. In adoration and in thanksgiving, in contrition and in supplication, we have acknowledged both our dependence on Almighty God and the help He offers as individuals and as a Nation.”

Most recently, President Biden in his 2024 Presidental proclamation wrote, “Scripture tells us to rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and be constant in prayer.  This year, my prayer for our Nation is that we keep faith that our best days are ahead of us and continue to believe in honesty, decency, dignity, and respect. May we see each other not as enemies but as fellow human beings, each made in the image of God and each precious in His sight.”

For the sake of (your city), please join us for prayer on Thursday, May (day). I look forward to seeing you there!

May God bless you and the ones you love.

Sincerely,
